Understanding your proportions is not about hiding anything. It is about knowing which silhouettes create the visual balance you want. A high waist elongates the leg. A structured shoulder balances a fuller hip. A wrap creates a defined waist on almost any frame. Learn your geometry and use it deliberately.
A well-fitting dark trouser or jean, a white or ivory blouse, a tailored blazer, a quality midi or wrap dress, a neutral knit sweater, a classic trench or structured coat, a simple black top, a versatile skirt, a quality bag, and one pair of heels or ankle boots that go with everything.
The number on the label is irrelevant. What matters is whether the garment fits your body as it is today — not as it was, not as you hope it will be. Clothes that fit well make you look and feel better immediately. Cut the tags if the number bothers you. Wear what fits.
Choose two or three neutrals that work together and one or two accent colors you genuinely love. When everything in your wardrobe shares a palette, every piece works with every other piece. Getting dressed stops being a decision and starts being automatic.
Fitted top with a fuller skirt. Oversized top with slim trousers. Cropped jacket with wide-leg pants. The principle is always the same: balance volume. When one piece is relaxed, the other is fitted. When you understand this, you can make almost anything work.
Cheap fabric photographs cheap, feels cheap, and ages poorly. Before you buy anything, touch it. Does it feel substantial? Does it drape well? Will it hold its shape after washing? A $60 blouse in quality fabric will serve you better than a $200 blouse in something thin and synthetic.
In the Pacific Northwest, layering is not optional — it is a daily reality. Build a system: a base (fitted top or blouse), a mid-layer (cardigan or blazer), and an outer layer (trench or coat). Each layer should work independently and together.
Stop buying clothes for a hypothetical version of yourself. Buy for the Tuesday you actually live. A wardrobe that works for your real life, worn with confidence, will always outperform a wardrobe built for someone else's.
The goal is not more — it is the right ones. One quality bag, one pair of earrings, one layered necklace or none. Accessories should feel considered, not accumulated. When in doubt, remove one thing before you leave the house.
